Re: [microsound] PowerBore

just some additional thoughts (and the joy of slipping vince clarke's name
on this list, hee hee...)

- some years ago vince clark (of yazoo/erasure fame) was interviewed and he
defended his decision of using completely sequenced backing tracks (limiting
himself to maybe move a knob once in 5 minutes) that the audience just wants
to hear a good song. and that he would do injustice to the songs by trying
to actually 'play' the tracks (makes sense, as it's so robotic). of course
this is microsound list, but i started to think about it: if the audience
likes the music, they most propably don't care or even think about 'how is
it done?' or 'god how boring this looks..'

- kid606 made an interesting remark of audience in electronic music, like,
in a normal rock concert you have a 5% of people who care about your gear,
what guitar strings you use, etc. in 'electoric' show you often only have
those 5% of people...

- some of the most entrancing concerts i've heard in last couple of years
were merzbow and otomo yoshihide/sachiko m (as filament). visually, nothing
happened on those shows, total intense concentration. that in conjuction
with the music (total chaos of merzbow, ultra-minimal high frequencies of
filament) made a very strong impression.

- i once saw a electro show where they had an extraordinary amount of
'extra' stuff on-stage: drum machines, toys, effect boxes, etc. well, it
still seemed that 99% of their music was coming from the laptop, seemingly
pre-programmed (i was able to have a backstage-view). i'm not really sure if
that should bother me. it didn't bother the people dancing...

- there's been interesting remarks about the matmos opening for bjork shows
with their own music. people (most of who have never heard stuff like that)
have been very 'tolerant' for their show, and a crucial factor may be the
'visual' aspect of their show (live playing of found objects, contact mic
usage, etc).

just my 0.02 euros..
