Re: Gilles Gobeil + academic electronic music at large
david turgeon wrote ----> not only has there been good academic electronic
music since the 70s, there's been several different strains of it. most of
it however has come from europe & canada, & almost never from the USA where
"tape
music" seems to have the worst reputation in the world for some reason.
<----
america shouldn't be written off completely- there are many tape music
composers working there, some amazing, some not. some of the best known-
paul lansky, morton subotnik, paul koonce, joseph anderson.
recommendations: richard karpen's life studies are some of the most poetic
tape music i've heard, and they are very different from his earlier
synth-based work that is available on cd. ludger brummer, while not
american, made several tape works at ccrma-stanford, and his work is also
very good.
as for the uk scene, some excellent music here. for those interested in
denis smalley, his work is subtler than most. give it a few chances and you
will find rewards.
empreintes digitales is probably the best label in the world for this type
of music.
