Re: [microsound] laptop hell & Hegel
"""So can the laptop performer create this state of aesthetic experience? I
think you are right to say no. But there is much to consider: modernism,
post-modernism, various problems associated with the avant garde, the
bluring of distinctions between high and low culture (which raise the
question: is microsound art? and if so is it possible to opt out of art and
still be microsound, or avant garde)."""
This is still OPINION. The whole argument is supported by theory. Wont
bother Copy and pasting it all so as not to unnerve a few.
All i will say is that i find it arrogant when someone makes blanket
statements concerning others perceptions. I know that i made a connection
with the Laptop Artist's the first time i ever went to that sort of show(As
have plenty of others i have spoken to on and off this list.) I know that
if just one person can make a connection then others must be able to as well
eh? And what about when people educate themselves about this particular
genre. When a fan walks away from a show like this and ask himself, "What
is it that the artist was exactly doing with that laptop and equipment" Do
you think that they will never understand the process with out actually
doing it themselves? To me this absurd. Im on this list and making
microsound and god knows what else because i was that person a few years
back. By your black and white rationale this is an impossibility.
As i stated b4. I feel that the laptop is no different then an instrument.
I see no difference in creating a track on a guitar or on a laptop. (Tho i
feel it is inherently harder to do so on a laptop, which can allow you to
interact with endless amount of instruments at the same time, as well as the
orchestration of all the information)
How does the audience know that i composed the song i am playing to them on
my guitar or piano? HOw do they even really know that i am playing it live
for them? Does the Audience interact or connect with a Conductor of a
Symphonic Orchestra? Even if he did\did not orchestrate the score? Do they
know that process in which it was all created with? Do they know exactly
what he is doing? I mean they see him waving his arms around like an idiot,
but his actions are ambigious to them when applying your rationale are they
not?
This argument comes around every few months or so. Cyclical. i dont mind
it as much when their is open honest debate. What Irks me is when opinions
are presented as facts, as well as being supported by theory. (Not that i
have anything against theorey. I believed i learned alot from these
debates, more so from the individuals that i directly disagree with) But
in the end Theory isnt fact. I feel poeple should do more thinking/and
exploration themselves. Why approach the investigation of a situation as
have others, or applying their thought process. It is important to
understand others processes of investigation and thought,i admit this but
it should not end your curiosity on a topic because some one else has
already claimed to have resolved the issue.
