Re: [microsound] laptop hell & Hegel

Ian i am glad that i was able to brighten up your day. I wish you would
respond to my entire argument as opposed to my dissing the support of your
argument. If you are stateing something as a fact i hard it find to digest
if you back it up by theory/ theorist's alone.

"""But even though the laptop performer is doing something extremely
interesting, creating music on the fly, creating a unique composition, in
the "here and now," the concept is vacant unless the audience are able to
associate the sounds with the process. There is nothing wrong with this,
its just that for all intents and purposes, what the audience receives is
for them essentially the same as what they would get from a DJ (who plays
his own recordings). The performance lacks the aura of the unique artwork
in the "here and now" because the audience don't have the means of bridging
the concept with the reality, which constitutes the artwork, or at least
the aura of the artwork. I don't think that being able to make a vague
guess at the process is enough to unify the the concept and reality of the
performance. At least it is not for me."""

Is this not your opinion! Based upon your past readings and studies?
While i admit i learned alot from your argument i still think its is a
blanket statement. To me you are saying that it is impossible for any
audience member to ever make any connection with the perfromer.

You also didnt respond to the following which adresses your point. Its a
solid analogy IMO. If not explain to me how it differs and i will be all
ears.

"""How does the audience know that i composed the song i am playing to them
on
my guitar or piano? HOw do they even really know that i am playing it live
for them? Does the Audience interact or connect with a Conductor of a
Symphonic Orchestra? Even if he did\did not orchestrate the score? Do they
know that process in which it was all created with? Do they know exactly
what he is doing? I mean they see him waving his arms around like an idiot,
but his actions are ambigious to them when applying your rationale are they
not?"""

To clarify further the point i was driving at, what is the difference
between the entire process of creating music on traditional instruments and
creating music on a laptop, gear, or whatever is considered non traditional?
What is the difference in playing the composition? I have a hard time
differentiating between the two because i dont buy the argument that the
audience understands what traditional musicians are doing but not what a
laptop musician is doing. Do they reall what Carlos Santana is really doing
with all those effects pedal? Shure they know that he composed the song at
an earlier point in time but to me the guitar and the laptop are the same
thing. A tool. Both of which work in a different fashion. I believe that
most of the audience who attend a show of this genre(electronic, idm, micro)
are knowledgable about the process involved. They know that in most cases
the music was composed prior to the show and the laptop is the medium in
which the music is presented. Specially if the audience members are fans of
the specific performing artist.

If i came across in a crass manner i apologize. I meant no disrespect.
This is all a learning process for everyone involved. Ive got alot of
reading to do because of you but until the point where i come across
something that enlightens me to your point of view i will stay in
disagreement.
