OPENING COCCYX, a chemi-luminescent installation with 12 channel sound.
Bursts of light are emitted as a result of a chemical reaction which
occurs as drops of phosphoric solution fall into a pool of sodium
hypo-chlorite (bleach), creating luminescent rain.
The anatomical reference of the installation stems from an
inscription on the Apollo Temple at Delphi: "Know Thyself" - a long
standing pursuit also manifest in Eastern philosophy, Buddhism and
the studies of Leonardo Da Vinci - postulating that by understanding
the workings of the human being, one can understand the workings of
the universe. After birth, the nine sacral and tailbones are fused
into two, enabling the trunk of the body to stand upright. Unless
the sacral and tailbones are reopened, it is not possible for the
neck muscles, cervical spine and throat to operate freely. It is not
possible to reach an illuminated state until this process is
completed.
For the exhibition of "Opening Coccyx" at Diapason, Evelina Domnitch
and Dmitry Gelfand have invited Richard Chartier to create a 12
channel sound installation. The sound accompanying the installation
is a composition entitled "of surfaces" by Richard Chartier. This
work has been reconfigured as a surround sound piece for the
installation.

EVELINA DOMNITCH / DMITRY GELFAND http://www.portablepalace.com
Dmitry Gelfand and Evelina Domnitch create interdisciplinary art
works which integrate chemi-physical experimentation with optics and
computer science. Current scientific findings, particularly regarding
waveform phenomena, are employed by the artists for investigating
questions of perception and
immortality. Such investigations are salient because the scientific
picture of the world serves as the
basis for contemporary thought, and nonetheless the rigorous nature
of the fundamental sciences does not
permit the entertainment of such questions. Selected shows: White
Box, New York; an outdoor water vapor and light installation in
Wellington Tunnel, Montreal, curated by Quartier Ephemere;
Belarussian Museum of
Contemporary Art, Belarus; Museum Carolino Augusteum, Salzburg;
Inauguration Show, Mains d'Oeuvres, Paris;
"Interferences 2" International Media Festival, Belfort, France; 9th
New York Digital Salon, School of
the Visual Arts and Leonardo Magazine(MIT).
