Recently "Fresh Air" reran an interview with Lynch in which he mentioned
that Eraserhead (I think it was) played as a midnight movie in several
theaters for _years_ before it "broke". That niche market took a long time
to develop and did so mostly through word of mouth. I don't imagine big
labels or studios have the inclination or expectation of growing a fan base
or an artist for that matter.
