or maybe I'm off my rocker and my ego is still colouring my opinions. let
me know what you think.

then again, i may be misinterpreting your comment...im thinking of ego from a structural viewpoint (the self, the part that is in touch with external reality) and not necessarily conceit or self-importance to the point of exclusion. though the two can be related.

so perhaps people are picking up on the fact that much of this music (equipment and process aside) appears not to be ego driven, which is certainly disconcerting (and arousing emotions of anger, confusion, fear?) to many coming from a more traditional background. like music critics/writers.
