RE: [microsound] software

I've been using Ableton Live since it was first released last January (on a Powerbook G3 500) and it's very easy and flexible to use.

Real briefly, you can use it as a step sequencer in the "Arranger" mode, or trigger samples that you can map out on individual tracks in the "Session" mode. Samples can be set up to trigger, gate, toggle or repeat. Also in v.1.5, you can set your samples to follow a "global" timing setting or set them independently (2 bars, 4 bars, 1/16, etc...).

Ableton's web site (http://www.ableton.com) has a nice Flash overview that's worth the slightly large download size.

I also highly recommend Peter Nyboer's Girl: Loop Mixing software for Mac. (http://girl.yowstar.com) Again you can trigger individual samples, crop, sequence, mix different samples (in different modules), add effects, manipulate, etc...

I found out about Girl: from this list, as Peter is a contributor here as well.

Both can be used as improvisational tools very easily. Feel free to email me offlist if you have any specific questions. Hope this helps!

Subject: [microsound] software

hi everyone, wondering about some software. i'm trying to find some sequencing software or something that will take some samples, and play them back either fully in a controlled pattern or pretty much randomly, or maybe both at the same time, based upon time signature/bpm.

any ideas? i'm running windows.

and also, any mac ideas are welcome as well: though i'm not using a mac,
i'll be migrating to the mac platform sometime soon, and would like to start
getting a decent system together before then because i've got some macs to
toy around with here at work...

anyway, thanks for any help guys.
