Re: [microsound] Cutting edge???
"""" I don't care if I was the first person to use Arizona Iced
Tea cans to make music; it was never experimental, it was never meant
to be progressive, or cutting edge, and god forbid revolutionary"""""
But that is a label imposed by others, is it not? More so because it doesnt
follow traditional music making techniques, an exploration or experiment if
you will? I agree that this is a overused buzz word but what other
optionare we left with?
"""The only thing I will predict is that these term abuses will
continue. People are complex bundles learned behaviors who usually aren't
aware of why they act the way they do""""
People also have a need to catagorize things. Not all that do this are evil
genre destroying johnny come lately mongers. Some people need to be able to
describe things 3when they communicate.
""""3. Ideas surrounding microsound/lowercase, and many other methodologies,
are no different or newer than ideas that have been in place for decades.
Listening to quiet sounds isn't different from listening to long gradaully
changing sounds of minimalism, or music from indeterminacy. Making music
with laptops isn't different from making music from splicing tape,
which isn't different from making music with radios, which isn't
different from making music with phonographs, the theremin, the
telharmonium."""""
Spot on. I dont believe i could have said it any better my self. Except
the Theremin was an evil communist plot to spy on the rest of the world.(Its
true:))
""""progressive," and "cutting edge," oh and "revolutionary," are such buzz
words. Western society is so consumed with forward thinking it gives me
vertigo. My actions now will be justified by what happens in the
future. I am part of a revolution. And other nonsense. I predict that no
one can give an adequate definition of these terms because they have
become meaningless. If I am doing physics
the furthest thing from my mind is whether a certain method is
progressive. "Oh, taking that integral to infinity is cutting edge. That
is too experimental." Another word that means shit to me now and forever
more: "EXPERIMENTAL." (I do like the word "fascinatic" though"""""""
This really confuses me. I can really appreciate your frustrations but at
the same time i am included in your blanket statement. How else do i
describe to others what i do when i lock myself away in my studio and turn
another shade paler? I am experimenting with sound. Sometimes i know/or
hope i know what direction things will end up in, sometimes i have not a
clue. Thats the whole point. Its an experiment. I guess the whole issue
is really pointless in the community itself. I believe there is a
difference between an ignorant journalist who does an article on IDM or
Microsound/Glith whatnot because they want to portray an image of "Being in
the know of things" and between people on this list, using the term
"Experimental"
I am even more confused now.
