alesis m1 monitors. they're powered, a touch under 500 dollars and work beautifully. as far as a mixing board, if you have just minimal equipment you might want to look into a behringer mx602a 6 channel board. ive been using this setup for about 2 or 3 years now, and love it.

Hi -

I use KRK Rokit's. They're nice because they're
relatively cheap, but they also have a decent size
cone(about 6 inches in diameter) so you can hear your
low end while you're working. You'd need a preamp (I
use a Hafler), and the total cost would be around
$500US.
