I'll probably cause a few groans. .
I have a few things to say about the piece.
First off. I noticed a kind of'patchwork quality' a sort of grid of
intersections that vaguely reminded me of an E.M. Forster novel or even
somthing by Gide. I reach a certain point and I can see vistas , I reach
another point and the vista changes.
It also reminds me of certain pieces of my own that I thought were kind of
patch or 'iffy ' and tried to forget them in favor of something more
stylistically immaculate. I imagine that was part of the intention. . .most
people who make electronic music probably have these things they secretly
like , yet they know it isn't going to impress someone looking for a
commercially viable product. That idea taken further could have interesting
political implications , like saying to the u.s. goverment:
"O.k. let's take it from the top. . this time I'll be the boy and you can
be the girl."
I mean , most goverment officials probably don't compose electronic music ,
yet they surround themselves with technological devices and end up making a
kind of half-assed composition(al soup) by default; they probably don't
spend much time fussing with the sound or' rubbing it in'.
For me there has always been the opinion towards Kim's music of " Yeah ,
ok. dude , so what?" I like it much better after hearing it live. There's
something really unoppressive about the starkness which in itself is
liberating. I'd be interested to find out how something like this piece
works live: Is everyone going to explore the same imaginary vistas from
different perspectives?
