AVAILBLE 7/15:

infr01 Toshiya Tsunoda "Extract from Field Recordings Archive #3: Solid Vibration" CD

The sound work of Toshiya Tsunoda represents a radical rethinking of the concept of field recordings. By applying a square wave to an area of urban environment, he makes audible the vibration of air in extremely small or otherwise unattainable spaces. With the deceptively impersonal air of a purely scientific cataloguist, Tsunoda records minute vibrations, mostly outdoors and near to a body of water, meticulously writing down every event that occoured in the area during the time of the recording. A founding member of the WrK group of installation and conceptual artists (which also includes m/s and Jio Shimizu, among others), Tsunoda?s area of concern employs the language of physics and mathematics to reveal beauty and simplicity in outdoor environments. But rather than stop at the mere content-driven documentary of most field recording work, Tsunoda?s mastery of editing and recording reveal depths of sonic detail that could never be heard otherwise.

Past extracts from his archive have included the motion of air inside a glass bottle, or in the cracks of manhole covers. Tsunoda?s latest album is an investigation the motion of air across or within solid surfaces discovered in warehouse towns and Japanese seaports. What is most remarkable about these recordings is their subtle poetry and surprising musicality. Each piece is unmistakably a musical composition, even when it's subject is as deceptively simple as the vibration caused by interference between a dock worker's drill and a 120 Hz wave coming off the side of a boat, or a door, or a fence.

Tsunoda?s work has been published by Selektion (Germany), WrK (Japan), V2 (Netherlands), Sonic Tiger (US) and Hapna (Sweden). His work was included in Intransitive?s ?VARIIOUS? 2CD compilation in 1999. He lives in Tokyo.

"Solid Vibration" is the first release on Infringitive, a new collaborative label from Intransitive (USA) and Fringes (Italy). In the US, you can find this at Forced Exposure, Anomalous Records and RRRecords. For the rest of the world, contact Fringes (www.fringesrecords.com) for info.
