the experimental films being shown at the performance i posted about
earlier are in a similar vein.
for me, this odd lost genre of experimental film + video raise the
"digital vs analogue" question. probably a lot of people on this list were
aware of autechre before they were aware of bernard parmegiani,
or knew oval before they'd heard xenakis' tape works.
it's shocking to find such concrete evidence that ideas aren't necessarily
tied to a specific technology. parmegiani + xenakis (and hundreds of others)
were able to achieve radical + complete expression with tools that we now
consider primitive...in spite of the tools, not because of them.
sometimes it almost seems like some artists must have foreseen the future
(did the silver apples invent techno in 1968?).
similarly, scott bartlett (whose "serpent" will show at the performance i
posted about) seems to have time-travelled to the present, absorbed
Nato + AfterEffects + Flash, jumped back to his own era + used a 16mm
optical printer to create films that put all the digital crap to shame...
