Xenakis describes his frustration with trying to get instrumentalists to play his pieces without emotion...so while it may be true in most places it doesn't follow that it is true in all places...but nevertheless, there is a lot of math to be heard in MF18M...

i remember luigi nono once talked about this "performing without emotion" issue too. he said it is impossible to ask human performers to play without emotion, because there are so many "uncontrollable" things which human just cannot ignore. even though you ask to some cello player to play as dray as possible with no dynamic, and let's say, he does it really well. but still, there will be so many things going on which is impossible to omit.

i read xenakis did not like (or believe) the term "artificial intelligent music" or "algorithmic music". his ST series are totally computer generated and automated, but he always used "real" performers to play them with acoustic instruments.

all interesting and fascinating. :-)
