Hello,

I am researching into the same field. One of the main problems for me 
was how to get control signals into the computer, at least after I 
switched to Macintosh which lacks the simpler ports in favor for USB 
and Firewire. One cheap solution is following:

A device converting 64 connectors to Midi NoteOn and Off. And even 
some analog voltages are transferd to the 127 steps of midi, lot of 
input to freak around with it for example with Max/MSP.
