Radio Pharmakopolis

--------------------------
Radio Pharmakopolis

Tuesday September 10, 2002
5-7pm MST (23:00 GMT)

Digital Media Studies
University of Denver

Radio Pharmakopolis will stream from the Digital Media studios of the
University of Denver, providing a transformative node of the OpenAir
Radiotopia, part of the Ars Electronica 2002 Festival in Linz, Austria. The
Radio Pharmakopolis project constitutes the live performative component of
the "Internet Download Sound" series. For the OpenAir event, em.chia and The
pHarmanaut will mine the usual daily assortment of gloomy news content for
mysterious hidden messages, unintended humor, occasional melodic beauty, and
general nonsense.

Participants:

em.chia

em.chia is the project of Matt Chiabotti, who explores the distributed
environments of the World Wide Web by using the browser as both delivery
mechanism and performance instrument. em.chia will use an array of browser
plug-ins as live DJ tools, turning directly to the ethereal bitstream of
webcasts and embedded sound files for his sources.

The pHarmanaut

The pHarmanaut is Trace Reddell's post-turntablist project, featuring
digital remixes from a variety of sources with '60s punkadelic
undercurrents, bursts of glitch, and retro-science space rock. The majority
of The pHarmanaut's sources for the Radio Pharmakopolis stream will be
spoken words gathered at random from Internet news webcasts loaded up into a
granular step sequencer with delay effects for reprocessing. Raw MIDI
information used for sequencing and to determine the movements of all
controls, filters and switches on the software synthesizer will come from
converted .txt files of Francis Bacon's utopic work, "The New Atlantis".
