about samples

Hi,
I don't want to be polemic, but what satisfaction may have an artist
in using other people sounds? Yes, of course I know that if one wants
to make a song with a 808 drum, surely those sounds will be the same
as many other use (the same can be said for a piano or a violin).. but
talking about samples as a "long" sound or pattern... what
satisfaction may have an artist in using other people work? I'm
thinking about bjork (and matmos) that in her last record has used and
rearranged various sounds (from to rococo rot or oval or Console
(Martin Gretschmann) whose one of his song has been taken as is and
BJork has just put her voice over it)... surely these songs with Bjork
voice are wonderful, but isn't that a sort of a remix rather than an
artistic creation?

for the musician on the list: do you try to use only "self-made"
sounds or do you steal them? and what do you steal?

ciao
