i think it's absolutely possible to create 'new' forms which are 
nonetheless influenced by other things, whether in style or attitude or 
technique.  it just depends at which point you're drawing a line, and how 
hard you're trying, where your sensibilities lie, where your ideal of 
enjoyment lies.  and as has i'm sure been said to death, i don't think much 
great stuff has really been created out of the air -- it's always been 
shaped in some way by what came before it.  blah, blah, blah.
