From what I know, the beef between NN and C74 has nothing to do with
IRCAM. I gather that it stems from interpersonal/interdeveloper
breakdowns between the 2 parties, and was fueled by a list posting
where a C74 programmer used the term "reverse engineer" in regard to
parts of NN's Nato software. Since C74 has come out with their own
Nato-killer extension to Max (Jitter), NN apparently feels that there
are grounds for legal action. I highly doubt this to be a viable
case, since C74 would have seen that coming a mile away and would
take any appropriate action to purge copyrighted code from their
program.
Anyway, it's a very heated relationship between both parties. The
possibility of irrational behavior on either side of the equation is
highly probable.
All I know is Jitter rules, and C74 as an entity is much easier to
communicate with than NN. Which is not to say Nato doesn't rule,
it's just rather obfuscatory and NN's documentation is not as helpful
as C74's.
