with special guest Pauline Oliveros

the pioneer of microsound meets the founder of deep listening

Troy, NY: iEAR presents computer musician and microsound pioneer Kim
Cascone in concert Wednesday, November 20, 2002, at 8 PM in West Hall
Auditorium on the campus of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy,
New York. The first set will be a solo performance of new electronic
music and video by Kim Cascone. He will be joined for a second set by
iEAR professor Pauline Oliveros, an internationally renowned composer
and performer. Admission is $5 for general public and $3 for RPI
community members with ID and seniors. For more information, call
518.276.4829 or visit http://www.arts.rpi.edu/events.

Kim Cascone, the pioneer of the digital music aesthetic known as
"microsound," has a long history involving electronic music: he received
his formal training in electronic music at the Berklee College of Music
and the New School in New York City in the 1970's. He has worked with
both David Lynch (as Assistant Music Editor on both "Twin Peaks" and
"Wild at Heart") and Thomas Dolby (as a sound designer and composer for
Dolby's company Headspace). He founded Silent Records in 1986, which
quickly became one of the United States' premier electronic music labels.

Since 1980, Kim has released more than 15 albums of electronic music and
has worked/performed with Keith Rowe, Peter Rehberg (a.k.a. Pita), Oval,
Scanner, Carsten Nicolai, Doug Aitken, and David Toop among others.
Cascone has performed and lectured all over North America and Europe at
sites such as Micro 2 Mutek (Montreal), Transmissions Festival (North
Carolina), Pukkelpop (Belgium), the Tate Modern (London), Mediamatic
(Amsterdam), the Museum of Contemporary Art (Denver), the Refrains
Conference (Vancouver), Observatori (Spain), and Stanford
University/CCRMA (Stanford). He has also written for Computer Music
Journal (MIT Press), Artbyte Magazine, and Parachute Journal, and is one
of the founders of the microsound email list.

Pauline Oliveros' life as a composer, performer and humanitarian is
about opening her own and others' sensibilities to the many facets of
sound. Since the 1960's, she has influenced American Music profoundly
through her work with improvisation, meditation, electronic music, myth
and ritual. Many credit her with being the founder of present day
meditative music. All of her work emphasizes musicianship, attention
strategies, and improvisational skills. Pauline Oliveros' work is
available on more than 17 recordings produced by companies
internationally. In 2001, her 70th birthday was celebrated with concerts
and retrospectives around the world.
