Try PD....
its arguably better than max... its open source, its free , it's by the same
programmer.
Its always being developed. Its slightly more programmer orientated than max
(i.e. less library objects and more of a do it yourself ethic)

But if this scares you a little bit
(its quite programmy stuff and it hasn't got all the colored knobs and
sliders most people love)
