That's an interesting point about reading without bookmarks.  How about 
spiritual books then like the Bible, I Ching, etc.  People read them in a 
non-linear fashion and come to think of it, they can sometimes have a 
physical presence in a room and create a sort of "ambience' just lying 
there.
