Re: [microsound] reading
Hi,
I'm quite new to this list, so sorry if I mention something which might have
been discussed in lengths: Michel Serres' book The Parasite. I'm not sure
whether it has been translated into English. He's disccussing the figure of
the 'parasite' -- on the one hand in fables, on the other hand in terms of a
media theory, in terms of abstract relations: as something that doesn't fight
directly but profits from the relationship of a 'host' to his/her/its 'table'
or from the fight between two antagonists. The parasite is always the third
in a relationship or in a 'channel'. In that respect he also discusses the
parasite as a tiny 'noise', 'static' or 'mistake' within a transmission,
something tiny which gets big in its effects. In this context he refers to
music and its parasites (which would be 'glitches' then, right?), to noise,
to static. A very interesting book, also a book which might be used for
political issues: how to fight a system? Not by rebelling against it but by
being its parasite, too tiny to be noticed directly but becoming large in
effects. Virus, reprogramming, all that.
But I am sure the books has been discussed on the list considering the
parasites project and all that.
