well, not quite.  I don't know when you last tried Debian but now you can ask the installer to get you 'basic' installation.  This way you get everything you need (kernel, networking, basic video + Xserver, built-in sound [which you will replace by alsa, anyways], keyboard, mouse and some administration tools, a text editor and other goodies).  After that, you just use apt to install stuff.  Apt will automatically select dependencies for you so slowly you get what you need.  This way you know you're installing only what you need.

I admit it's a bit tedious but better than installing 3G of stuff.

I used to run RH and then YDL (which is based on RH).  I like Debian.  Really.
