Re: [microsound] On the benefits/disadvantages of CDR as a medium for...
I do agree that there are some very interesting cd-rs being put outthere.
For example DJ Spooky(Paul Miller) came to one of my classes and gave
students 12 each unique and different than each other cd-rs that he mixed
the night before. So there is only one cd-r of the same kind. I mean nothing
gets more intriguing than that right? I definitely do believe that
personally released cd-rs as well as others that are released by innovative
people, if they are well thought of and visionary, can be quite beautiful
and superior to some cds. So, maybe as long as the one-offness and the
limited numbers of output are emphasized, a CD-R could be mesmerizing and
highly interesting? no? For example, I can not wait to see one of the Ferric
releases. It seems like the project is inherently cd-r based. the concept is
hand-in-hand with the medium, and print-on-demand is probably a lot more
powerful than a pre-editioned 100 cd-rs etc. in this specific case.
Thank you.

One more point - there are also plenty of artists who release their own
material, not because it's been rejected by Big Labels, but by choice.
Yannick Dauby has released most of his own work on cdr, as has the Quiet
American, as do Monos. Michael Northam always has a few copies of works on
cdr at gigs. Someone (was it Sawako?) told me of a series of one of a kind
cdrs she made to give out at gigs. These small runs can be more personal and
can end up being quite sought after.
I think it's interesting that in most contexts (food, clothes, etc) being
handmade or homemade is a sign of high quality and a personal touch, while
in music.... ?
