THE HAFLER TRIO
WHISTING ABOUT CHICKENS
fire INC f-10 - double CD with booklet in envelop package

Late 2002 sees the return of the Hafler Trio into the
world of procative products that involve sounds. Since their
inception in the mid 80s, Andrew McKenzie, Chris Watson and Edward
Moolenbeek have been responsible some of the finest mood engineering
around. Although music might not be the term they would use for it,
seeing it rather as sound research, their work has continued to
develop throughout many releases until a few years ago. Moolenbeek
died, and Watson left the group to pursue his own work of field
recordings. The Hafler Trio for the last 15 years or so has been
Andrew McKenzie alone, with the occassional involvement several
people that work on new releases as a project base extension where
needed. Release-wise things became quiet following the mid 90s,
consisting of a few obscure vinyl items. Andrew stopped making
commerical releases mainly because he "was also disgusted with the
move into subsidised existence by people I thought intelligent enough
to understand that this means almost certain spiritual death. my
mistake." Commuting every two months back and forth to Denmark, he
worked as a NATO level 2 security and network programmer. Recently he
became seriously ill and moved back full time to Iceland.

"Whistling About Chickens" was announced by Fire INC. nearly seven
years ago, and has undergone several reworkings before it now finally
materializes as a double CD. In the usual cryptic manner, the theme
of this CD (or in fact a whole series of interconnected and
interlocking 'themes') is like multi-nested russian dolls. Various
people who might be involved in this CD are Willem de Ridder, Franz
Graf, Jochen Schwartz as well as various Icelandic people. but that's
difficult to tell for sure.

There has been a period of 7 or 8 years for this work's completion,
and between it and other recent works there are technological
differences and developments (both externally and internally). Each
one of them, in addition, deals with completely different "things".
But as before, The Hafler Trio deals with the same concerns, somtimes
more obscure and sometimes clearer, depending on the approach for
each situation. the essence is precisely the same. perhaps it glows a
little brighter...
