de la artefarita naturo de la lumo
the lumo cd is the result of my first workshop on "digital music" at the =
university of fine arts and design hbkSaar, saarbr=FCcken during the spring/=
summer semester 2001.
i was invited by andreas brandolini whos a design professor and most of the =
people attending where design students and had never before worked with sound =
as material.
the main subject of this semester was "kunstlicht" (thats artificial light), =
resulting in a week with 3 different exhibitions, one being "die lange nacht =
des lichts" for which i worked with a group of 12 students on the synthesis of =
light/sound sculpture. the results where shown in the (very nice) garden of =
the saarland museum.
besides my introduction in dsp software (pro tools, soundhack, argeiphontes =
lyre) ekki ehlers was invited to lecture on the history of digital music =
(topics where the history of software, xenakis, thaemlitz among others). =
people where very fascinated and after we discussed strategies/conceptional =
approaches with them and i started to work with them in protools i was so =
surprised how fast most of them were able to translate their knowledge and =
abilities in freehand, photoshop, autoCAD and the likes into working with =
sound.
time was very tight for the whole project (we had appr.14 weeks and also had =
to organize the whole event at the museum) but i encouraged my students to =
work on what i thought sounded very refreshing to me. in the end we had a very =
nice exhibition and last but not least a great party with 1200+ people, a =
playhouse label feature, aeter from copenhagen and ekki and me djing.
now what you hear on the cd are not the pure soundtracks of the installations. =
i thought most of them are not so interessting as stand-alone musical pieces =
without the light part so i asked the students to rework their pieces for a cd =
release in another semester (winter 2001), were we also had akira rabelais as =
a guest giving a brief introduction for the lyre and his visual work.
so i.e. miriam rech made those nice variations of her original piece "i see a =
darkness" (which is track 02 and hit ekki and me like a hammer*).
miriam and i also made the artwork and we deceided to do it in esperanto as a =
spectral breaking-off of language.
the cd is available in an edition of 400 (they are going to be cheap, =
something like 6 or 8 euros + shipping/packaging)
