recording hardware

I'm shopping for a nice, portable, relatively inexpensive (<= $150) device
for doing field recording. So far, I'm leaning towards getting an mp3 player
capable of recording: I dislike the idea of having my recordings mangled by
128-bit compression, but then again, the alternatives available for a poor
college student are slim. I suppose if I could find a minidisc player that
could dump its contents via USB or somesuch, this would work as well. Any
suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
