i don't think this is true. brahms, palestrina- these guys were looking
backward for inspiration. there are probably other examples from other
traditions as well. artists are people [too]; some forward looking, some
backward looking [some nice, some assholes, ...].

what do you mean? how do you measure progress? weren't all the artists
at that time just making their art as a creative response to being
alive? some we like better now, some we like less now.

um, cubism is a cut up technique.
