Following on from the discussions of 'neo-modernism' (?!) and new
electronic music.... These essays make good book ends.
Babbitt, M."Who Cares if You Listen?" in Schwartz and Childs (eds.),
Contemporary Composers on Contemporary Music, Holt, Rinehart and
Winston, New York/Chicago, 1967.pp. 243-250.
and the reply from Susan McClary 'Terminal Prestige: The Case of
Avant-Garde Music Composition', Cultural Critique,
Spring 1989, pp.57-81
Some others
Hartwell, R 'Postmodernism and art music' in The last post: Music
after modernism, Manchester University Press, Manchester/New York,
1993.
in the same book
Theberge, P 'Random Access: music, technology, postmodernism' in The
last post: Music after modernism, Manchester University Press,
Manchester/New York, 1993.
Hodgkinson, T. 'Interview with Pierre Shaeffer' (plus introduction),
Re Records Quarterly, Volume 2, No.1, pp.4-10. - This is a wildly
provocative interview where Schaeffer basically consigns his life's
work to the trash... Good for stimulating discussion on music beyond
the 'pitch/duration' paradigm (see below)
Wishart, T. 'What is Sonic Art?', and 'Beyond the Pitch/Duration
Paradigm' in On Sonic Art, Imagineering Press, York,
1985
Frith, S. 'Towards an aesthetic of popular music' in Leppert,
Richard and McClary, Music and Society: The politics of composition,
performance and reception, Cambridge University Press, Cambridge,
1987, pp.133-149.
If participants have access to a good university library then I guess
you could jump about a lot within identified themes, otherwise a
single book has advantages for people who can't access these
resources, as they can just buy one book and participate.
