I found it to be a bit idealistic. Hyde tends to gloss over the more scary
aspects of the gift such as its link to sacifice. Some more meaty texts
include:

Mauss, Marcel. _The Gift: Forms and Functions of Exchange in Archaic
Societies_. Trans. I. Cunnison. New York: Norton, 1967

Hubert, Henri, and Marcel Mauss. _Sacrifice: Its Nature and Function
_Trans. W. D. Hulls. Chicago: University of Chicago Press, 1964.

Bataille, Georges. _The Accursed Share_, Vol I. Trans. Robert Hurley, New
York: Zone, 1988

Bataille, Georges. _The Accursed Share_. Vol II & III. Trans. Robert
Hurley, New York: Zone, 1991.

Pefanis, Julian. _Heterology and the Postmodern: Bataille,
Baudrillard, and Lyotard_. Sydney: Allen & Unwin, 1991.

Weiss, Allen S. _The Aesthetics of Excess_. Albany: State University of
New York Press, 1989.

Derrida, Jacques. _ Given Time:1. Counterfeit Money_. Trans Peggy Kamuf.
Chicago: University of Chicago Press, 1992.

Derrida, Jacques."From Restricted to General Economy: A Hegelianism without
Reserve," in _Writing and Difference_. Trans. Alan Bass. Chicago:
UNiversity of Chicago Press, 1978.
