  this might be rather obvious, i dunno, but i was once daft enough not to 
realise that my mini-disc recorder actually had 2 inputs, one normal line-in, 
and one mic-in, i used the normal line-in for ages with a small sony stereo 
mic, with noisy results, imagine my surprise the day i found out how 
amazingly clear my recordings became when using the right input !!!! Oh, and 
replace the batteries like the man says ..
