I work as a sound designer for film. I had some recordings of
distant .5 - 1km away traffic whizzing by on a highway. There
was an amazing dronal doppler quality to the sounds. Almost
cartoon bee passing like sounds. I was trying to create a little
more tension with the ambience and started to play the sample
two or three octaves down on the keyboard. THe results were
simply amazing. I've since taken those sounds and used them
in some of my own musical works.
I think the thing that worked the best about the pitched sounds
was that it was a familiar sound. You understood the language
but it was still a bit foreign or spooky at the same time so
that part of it tricks your brain. You know it but you haven't
heard it like that before.
