Re: [microsound] "Academic" computer music?

for some the term 'computer music' is all things electroacoustic made on
computer, while for others it has specific aesthetic implications. i
definitely find resonance in some work of e.g. denis smalley or francois
bayle, but this isn't what everyone means by 'computer music', even if
they're on the computer music currents cds. of those more commonly grouped
under the computer music tag, i find richard karpen's 'life studies'
amazingly poetic (they are very different from his work on the currents
cds), and respect much of barry truax and kaija saariaho. several others in
computer music and electroacoustics whose work i find worthwhile, but i
think the division between microsound and electroacoustic/computer music can
be quite arbitrary- it often has more to do with where the work was made and
what the composer calls it than what it sounds like. best,

ian
