Steve Roden is a visual and sound artist from Los Angeles.  His work =
includes painting, drawing, sculpture, films, and sound installation. In =
the sound works; objects, architectural spaces, and field recordings are =
abstracted through electronics to create audio new spaces, or 'possible =
landscapes'. The sound works present themselves with an aesthetic Roden =
describes as "lower case'' - sound concerned with subtlety and the quiet =
activity of listening.=20

Recent shows include the Stadt Galerie Museum in Saarbrucken Germany, =
Miami Museum of Contemporary Art, UCLA Armand Hammer Museum and the Mak =
Center for Art and Architecture Los Angeles, The Drawing Center, NYC; =
the Jennjoy Gallery, San Francisco, Kunsthallen Brandts Klaedefabrik, =
Odense, Denmark, Podewil, Berlin, Germany; the Santa Barbara =
Contemporary Arts Forum, California; Gallery E/Static, Torino, Italy; =
Studio 5 Beekman, NYC, NY; INMO gallery Los Angeles; and others.=20

Roden has performed live improvised soundscapes in arts spaces, =
galleries, museums, theatres, and alternative spaces worldwide including =
the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; the ICA and the Hayward Gallery, =
London; the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis; Logos, Gent, Belgium; the =
Musee de Beaux Artes, Nantes; as well as performance tours of Brazil and =
Japan.  Sound festivals include the International Symposium on =
Electronic Arts (isea), England; Transmissions, Chicago; Musique =
Ultimes, France; Interzone One, Japan; Sampling Rage, Berlin; En Red O, =
Barcelona; and others.  Recently Roden presented his filmwork 'book of =
seconds' at Cinema Nova in Brussels with live sound accompaniment, and =
his film/sound work 'cosmic dancer' was recently premiered at the =
Pacific Film Archives.=20

Roden has released several CD's of his sound works under his own name, =
as well as under the name 'in be tween noise'.  Labels include Trente =
Oiseaux, Germany; Sonoris, France; GMBH, France; Digital Narcis and Meme =
from Japan; and Line, USA.  Roden's work has appeared on a number of =
international compilations, including the Tulpas Project on Selektion, =
Germany.=20

In 1999, Roden co-edited the publication Site of Sound an exploration of =
the relationships between sound and architecture, with contributions =
from various architects, sound artists and critics including Christina =
Kubisch, Steve Peters, Tom Marioni, and Pierre Koenig.=20

Upcoming projects include a large-scale sound installation at the Stadt =
Galerie in Saarbrucken Germany for the exhibition "Resonance 2" in =
September 2002. 2003 solo shows of visual works include the Pomona =
College Museum of Art, California; Susanne Vielmetter Projects, Los =
Angeles; and Suyama Space, Seattle.  Roden will present a sound =
installation and video installation as part of the beyond noise =
conference at UCSB, Santa Barbara in August.  Upcoming performances =
include Nijmegen Holland; Albuquerque, New Mexico; and Los Angeles.  =
Upcoming CD releases include a document of a sound installation created =
for Inmo Gallery in Chinatown Los Angeles for Sonoris Records, France; a =
document of the Kunst Radio commission "Resonant Cities" for Trente =
Oiseaux, Germany; and a project done in collaboration with architect =
Tadao Ando related to his water temple in Japan for new plastic music, =
Los Angeles.

Non-Event is an independent curatorial project dedicated to presenting =
experimental, improvised and electronic music events in the Boston area. =
 The events are intended as cultural catalysts for the promotion and =
fostering of exchange between local and international avant-garde =
artists.  Over the past year, Non-Event has produced numerous shows in =
mutliple venues, from art galleries, to music clubs, to academic =
institutions, featuring leading contemporary musicians and sound artists =
from the international experimental music community. =20
