Granular Association, in collaboration with CEM and Goethe-Institut in
Lisbon,=20
present a performance by Marc Behrens and Paulo Raposo.

Marc Behrens (D) - computer
Paulo Raposo (PT) - computer

A conference will be held in the day before at CEM where M. Behrens will
give insights into his working methods focusing on some sound installations
from the last years. In addition one recent video work will be shown
('Collateral Generator of Forms - chapter 1'), that was commissioned by
Lampo, Chicago (USA) in 2002.

20.03.03 (5=AA Feira) - 21:45h
CEM - Centro Em Movimento,
Pra=E7a da Alegria, Lisbon, Portugal

This live event proposes an 'Audio Duel' between Paulo Raposo and M. Behren=
s
based on a work called 'Further Consequences of Reinterpretation' will be
their first sound collaboration (they collaborate since 2001 on the cover
design of Raposo's label sirr.ecords). This work is a product of a process
that was started by the japanese artist Nosei Sakata (*0), who asked other
artists to 'remix' some of his material (among them Behrens), to be release=
d
on the cd called '*0 - 0.000remix - INFLATION'. Earlier Sakata had produced
a cd which was playing back basically nothing (sound outside the human
hearing range), and the idea was to create 'everything from nothing'. When
Behrens received his promo copies he decided to take the process further:
taking material from the reinterpretation pieces by Taylor Deupree,
Hsi-Chuang Cheng, Aube, Richard Chartier, Akira Rabelais, John Hudak,
Bernhard G=FCnter, and Steve Roden he constructed a further reinterpretation
(to be released with the 2003 issue of Leonardo Music Journal/MIT press).
The portuguese artist Paulo Raposo is again reinterpreting that material.
For the concert, all of Raposo's and Behrens' reinterpretations will be
played in the form of a duel, fragmenting each of them, thereby creating a
whole new form. Very consequential.

Biographies

Behrens (Germany) creates delicate and beautiful electronic
music from edited and processed field recordings made in mountain forests,
building interiors, subway trains, construction sites ... and with
additional sound material from manipulated objects; e.g. rubber balls,
blocks of wood. In concert he sometimes uses contact microphones to play
parts of the performance space or his body. CDs of Behrens work have been
released on Trente Oiseaux (D), Digital Narcis (JP), Raster-Noton (D),
Edition ... (USA), Intransitive (USA), and sirr.ecords (PT).

Paulo Raposo (Portugal) is a sound and media artist interested in exploring
intersections between sound and image and sound and architecture. Raposo ha=
s
exhibited and performed his work in France, Germany, Netherlands, Spain,
Portugal and United States. In the early nineties he founded the electronic
music project 'vitriol' which remains active. Raposo puts an emphasis in th=
e
displacement of various sound sources as objects, acoustic instruments or
architectural spaces,... using custom-built software to create abstract
organic soundscapes. In 2001 he founded 'SIRR', a label dedicated to promot=
e
and disseminate experimental electronic music and other media. In 2002,
started the colective [des]integra=E7=E3o.
