Re: [microsound] KYMA/symbolic sound?

i think it ultimately depends on what the end result/medium/artform is
going to be... doing feature film audio digitally in the late eighties
would be fairly impossible without the outboard gear... consumer
computers just weren't powerful enough on their own. nowadays the gap is
certainly narrowing. that said, only recently have consumer applications
and sound cards integrated 5.1 surround sound capabilities - an essential
component for professional (i.e. hollywood) film sound design/mixing.
music has never really been an issue for the last ten years - it's mostly
really high end film production studios which benefit most from the
dedicated gear. of coarse this is already changing. i have a feeling pro
tools will lose it's foothold in the pro field within the next five
years. although, that said, there are a lot of crusty folks who like to
cling to the brand name as an signifier of 'professionalism.' one could
argue that it is branding above all else that is perhaps pro
tools/digidesign greatest asset.
