Perhaps individually, but once you add up the price of multiple 
plug-ins you'd be in the thousands of dollars anyway. These would 
also be limited to the power of the CPU. With Kyma you could use a 
modest computer as the programming interface and then add DSP cards 
as your needs and budget increased.

Then again it might not. At NAMM this January there were a number of 
dedicated processor boxes that had required computer software, so 
there's a trend toward hybrid (HW/SW) systems. At least one of these 
outboard boxes was analog, which is a more sensible solution to 
getting certain analog sounds than modeling them digitally.
