Re: [microsound] synths

Hi Sage petbodyisacontainer,

I'd say it's a matter of 'vision' (not 'fission') expectations and what
you feel comfortable with*. A stack of keyboards is good for working
spontaneously and making alot of sound quickly. Computer generated music has
the tendency of being something you try , think about , work on , go for a
walk , work on some more , do laundry , work on some more, meet a friend
,and so forth.

If you are undecided a good approach might be a used , reliable (yamaha
,roland) synthesizer with a midi interface and something like motu fastlane
to connect to a computer. That way you have the option of adding hardware
modules or using soft synths ,+ many different opportunities for signal
routing. This approach doesn't kill the spontanaeity too much.

One problem with owning several vintage hardware synthesizers is that they
do break down , deteriorate and can be costly or sometimes really difficult
to service.

There are software synths that are really quite good; reacktor, absynth ,
and even soundforum (freeware) from Native Instruments are capable of making
lovely tones rivaling analog synthesizers. There's also the option of
building tone generators , oscillators from scratch and using a computer for
the 'fussy' work( fine-tuning, sequencing , filtering and so forth).

I have found that I usually get more response if I actually play a piece of
music on a keyboard at some point during the process ; there's something
about tuning into someone's concious decisions that is probably reassuring.
One is also able to sense a person's conciousness through a computer ,
though it takes alot of concentrated work , and probably a different kind of
effort to achieve this..

I hope this was help, and excuse me if I'm treading really obvious
ground.. .

                            Bill
