OT (but maybe not) portable cd players and high freq

Hello all. I'm very short on time today, hence preventing me from doing
the research, due to preparing for a performance tonight, and wanted to
see if anyone knows anything about why some portable cd players may
distort while trying to play back extremely high frequencies. Aside from
a player being low quality, perhaps it partially has something to do with
the built in skip protection that many have these days? I tried 3 players
and the one that didn't have the skip protection, played the high
frequencies fine.
Aside from some of my material, I tested the players with Nosei Sakata's
(*0) 0.000 disc and found that I could actually hear something on it !
(other than the test tones at the beginning and end), but it was
distortion due to the frequencies.
Thanks in advance, Dale
