So in summary - The name Drone for a male bee appears to have been=20
onomatopoeic from *its* sound and then other similar sounds (most=20
notably bagpies) where named after it.

The best I can find is that of comes from the sound of a Bee the male of
which is called a Drone - which comes from:
"Middle English, from Old English drn"
At which point I get stuck not knowing Old or Middle English. So I
couldn't tell you if Drn has any relevant meaning...
