[So Cal] Quiet, this Saturday



Just a reminder of this Saturday's installment of Quiet, featuring=20
various forms of quiet music in an intimate setting.  Inspired in part=20
by the successful "Day of Attention" series organized by Josh Russell,=20
Quiet will showcase artists from Southern California and elsewhere in an=20
environment that fosters attentive listening.

The performers will present solo sets (except for Marcos and Lisle, a=20
duo), and, after intermission, will improvise as a quintet.  The concert=20
begins at 7:30 p.m. sharp; doors open at 7:00 p.m.  Quiet is a private=20
event at a residence in Long Beach, California, with a $10 suggested=20
donation (sliding scale).

Haco is a vocalist/lyricist-composer/multi-instrumentalist/studio=20
producer. She was a core member of After Dinner (1981-1991), one of the=20
first Japanese bands to gain a following abroad. She released her first=20
solo album in 1995. Around the same time, she began performing=20
improvisations with compact samplers, self-produced electronic units,=20
electric mandolin, percussion and toys along with voice. Her=20
performances with a "howling pot" have met with a particularly warm=20
reception everywhere. In addition, she is involved with the guitar=20
improvisation duo Mescaline Go-Go, the odd song unit Happiness Proof,=20
the all-female collaboration Hoahio, and the real sound collection and=20
observation organization, View Masters. She has collaborated on recorded=20
work or in performance with numerous musicians, including Peter=20
Hollinger, Pierre Bastien, Terre Thaemlitz, Carl Stone, Yamamoto=20
Seiichi, Otomo Yoshihide, Kam-pas-nel-la (Uchihashi Kazuhisa, Samm=20
Bennett, Zeena Parkins), Ash in the Rainbow (Sakamoto Hiromichi), Ikue=20
Mori, Aki Onda, and Yoshimi P-we. As guest vocalist, she has contributed=20
to CDs by Acid Mothers Temple and RonRuins (Ron Anderson and the Ruins).=20
Besides producing numerous recordings, she has given performances=20
throughout Japan and in many foreign countries. Her original style of=20
vocalizing and experimental pop sound surpasses conventional genres and=20
national borders, and continues to attract
new listeners.

San Francisco sound artist Aaron Ximm composes with field recordings.=20
For his Quiet American project, he uses recordings collected traveling=20
around the world. He seeks to cultivate an appreciation for=20
serendipitous soundscapes.  He wants you to listen, but not just to him.

Marcos Fernandes (percussionist, improviser, phonographer) has long been=20
active in the San Diego music scene as performer, producer and promoter.=20
Fernandes has performed in Japan, Hong Kong , Mexico and the US. He=20
helped found the Trummerflora collective, dedicated to the experimental=20
and improvisational art scene in Southern California. He has performed=20
and/or recorded with fellow improvisers George Lewis, Lisle Ellis, L=EA=20
Quan Ninh, Mike Keneally, Eric Glick Rieman and with the ensembles=20
Perfektomat, Wormhole and Ultra 7. Fernandes runs the artist-based=20
independent label Accretions, and has produced many of the titles=20
including the Trummerflora compilations that feature some of the=20
southland's more innovative experimentalists.

In 2002, Fernandes released "Hybrid Vigor" (Accretions) and contributed=20
tracks to "Frontier Life" (Accretions), "Track Whore Vol. 2" (Pan=20
Handler) and the phonography.org compilations. He toured Japan in May=20
with fellow Trummerflora members, the US West Coast with Wormhole in=20
September and performed at the 2002 NWEAMO Festival. Fernandes recently=20
participated in Sound/Shift Oakland, Field Effects in San Francisco,=20
Sonarchy Radio in Seattle and contributed a track to 'Field Recordings=20
and Manipulations' on Bake Records/Staalplat. A collection of his=20
phonographies are due to be released by S'agita Recordings (Italy) later=20
this year.

Lisle Ellis
Considered by many to be an important voice in improvised music, Ellis'=20
twenty-five years of activity has included stints with the Cecil Taylor=20
Quartet, Paul Bley and a long musical relationship with the late Glenn=20
Spearman. From 1975-1979, Ellis studied in New York at the renowned=20
Creative Music Studio (CMS).  While living in Canada, he co-founded the=20
New Orchestra Workshop (NOW) in 1978 and the Association des Musiciens=20
Improvisaterus de Montreal in 1991. Ellis has toured and performed=20
worldwide with many if not all of the luminaries of creative music. He=20
has also collaborated extensively with dancers, actors, and artists=20
worldwide.  Ellis has recorded extensively and is featured on at least=20
40 CD's and he began winning awards and commissions in 1978, and in=20
1991, he was the first musician honored in Canada as a recipient of the=20
Freddie Stone Award, which is presented annually to a musician who has=20
shown innovation and integrity in their field.

Glenn Bach is a sound artist who maps the sonic terrain of the city=20
through detailed sound walks, manipulated field recordings, sound=20
drawings, and found poems.  His audio works have appeared in numerous=20
online shows and projects, including a four-track EP forthcoming on the=20
Stasisfield label (www.stasisfield.com).  He has performed his work in=20
solo appearances and in improvisational group arrangements, including a=20
recent appearance at Sound/Shift Oakland, and upcoming performances this=20
summer at the Big Sur Experimental Music Festival and the CPEACH Summer=20
Series in Eureka, California.  He improvises with two other musicians as=20
Luminous Flux, and directs a larger group, The Double Blind Ensemble,=20
for his composed works.
