taken to the extreme you can generate music that is completely 
self-referential to a degree comparable to some of the writings of the 
oulipo <http://www2.ec-lille.fr/~book/oulipo/> or others 
<http://home.att.net/~rhhardin/selfref.html>
this might result in an aesthetic cul-de-sac, but it seems a worthy 
experiment nevertheless. I've heard composers talk of "fractal"  music, but 
never got a clear explanation as to the application of the term to their 
music.
