For sound generating I'd really suggest Orangator - it's an old freeware
satndalone softsynth, which though not without bugs, can generate really
crazy noises. What I also like about it is the fact that it doesn't
smooth off the loops' edges, resulting in very nice clicks.

And you should also look at Crusher-X - granular synthesis with tons of
parameters, fully working shareware version, you can craft whole
electro-acoustic pieces or separate loops and tones with this.
