Re: laptop is new jazz....

sorry, i'm responding to this late, i haven't checked
microsound emails in a bit.

i never really understood the comparison between jazz
and laptop music. i can see the comparison with some
laptop music, but both genres are so big and branch
off in so many directions that i don't think it's a
very accurate statement.

i enjoy the thought that electronic music and folk
have a connection. after all, most of today's
generation has grown up being more familiar with
electronic sounds and digitally editted recordings,
etc., than they (or we, since i guess i'm talking
about my own generation)are with truly acoustic (or
non-electronic) music.

also, i've always seen a connection between noise and
folk. mostly because i grew up with a variety of
different musicians, but no matter what instrument we
played, from computers to guitars, etc., we could
always have a big noise jam together. it was sort of
our common ground.

laptop + jazz is not a bad comparison in some ways.
but maybe
problematic,
in that (for me) jazz is so thoroughly rooted in the
experience of
being
Black in America, and it may be a mistake to think of
the music apart
from
that.

maybe the comparison can make sense, if you view
laptop music as an
expression of the experience of being White and in
Front Of A Computer.

[...not really serious -- am just noting the
attractiveness of these
kind of
exciting but sort-of-useless pronouncements: laptop is
the new folk,
quiet is the new loud, etc etc]
