Agreed, but @ least here in CHI, it seems these histories and 
practices are very interwoven and interdependent.

This is a very important point. I would add that connections are 
strong between what has been being discussed on this list as folk and 
game-boy music. Specific ppl I know are directly fusing these 
traditions (i.e. Mark Denardo, http://www.markdenardo.com) but more 
broadly, the culture of game-boy music seems to be more "grassroots" 
and/or self-organizing as well as relying primarily on individually 
authored apps, obsoleted technology and community driven resource 
sharing.
