Re: [microsound] brasil
ok, maybe i answer my own post with some underground info already
in-hand about Brasil. just to warm y'all up... this is a proposal that
was floated my way by some friends in Sao Paulo. it's currently under
consideration for one festival in Holland [Next 5 Minutes], but maybe
more interest [i.e. another European gig in late September of this year]
could bring it closer to reality... :-)

LSDiscos vs. Rádio Cipó
Referee: Mestre Laurentino
"Performance on stage by the two collectives (LSD and Rádio Cipó) that
spread MDB (Brazilian Digital Music) to the edges of our blue planet.
They'll be mediated and pacified by Mestre Laurentino, the Referee.
Participants: Mestre Laurentino - harmônica + Rádio Cipó: Ruy Montalvão
- MC, Guamat-Pa - MC, Nico Bates - electric guitar, Carlinho Vas -
groovebox + LSDiscos: Ricardo Lira - DJ, Marcus Salgado - bass guitar.
This sonic adventure between Rádio Cipó and LSDiscos is the result of
our meeting at the Midia Tactica Brasil event. During a couple of
months, we played unending sessions in order to fully develop both
improvisational and compositional possibilities of blending
deeply-rooted brazilian music with digimusic (what we call MDB). Since
then, we have been working on the register and final production of a set
of 20 songs, to be played live.
The aim of this project is to conjure up a common action between teams
of musical production geographically distant (Rádio Cipó and Mestre
Laurentino, based on Belém, Pará, Northern Brasil, and LSDiscos, whose
hqs are located on São Paulo, Southern Brasil - more than 2000 km
distant) but so close in terms of purpose, mirroring the disturbing
contradictions that so heavily mark Brasil. And certainly to create,
through a re-organisation of the relations between sound and sense via
urban interference in soundscape, a sonic image of the future for the
Brazilian cultural matrix.
MDB is a melting pot where you might find several typical brazilian
styles and approaches to music blended together with hip-hop, rap, funk,
dub, r&b, post-rock, to come up with an universal musical language. In
some cases, our apropriation of these influences might be literal; in
other, not, being noticed through the personal background and musical
formation of the musicians involved in this sonic adventure.
LSDiscos - Experimental electronica, post-rock, nu musique concrete,
afrofuturism, digikkkore: that's part of our menu. Spinning around
sounds and notions that are still impossible to be labeled. 100%
handcrafted and independent records. In order to produce a sonic assault
on your senses (that might range from sublime to plain urban psychosis,
passing through hi-brow cut-up experiments, sound poetry&sculpture,
surrealistic collage and chunky'n'greasy beats with brasilian flava), we
gather old analog machines (reel-to-reel taperecorders, dictaphones,
pick-ups, vintage pedals, electric organs, analog synths, mid-fi 80's
keyboards, electronic toys - yep: we are "The Revenge ov Lo-Tek") and
digital stuff (pcs running softwares which usually were 'cracked'),
looking forward to presenting the results of this marriage in a very
spontaneous mood Motto: "Sound, Silence and White Noise acting together
in Electronic Guerrilla".

Mestre Laurentino - João Laurentino (aka Mestre Laurentino and João da
Gaita) was born in the first day of 1926, in Pontas da Pedra (an island
located on the extreme Northern area of Brasil). His parents died when
he was 2 y.o. and the family Palmeira (headed by the judge Francisco
Antônio da Costa Palmeira) took care of him. Laurentino always loved
messing about with sounds, so when he was 10 y.o., he bought his first
harmonica, a german item which cost five thousand "réis" (old-times
Brazilian currency). When he was 14 y.o., he took part in a festival at
PRC-5 Radio. Laurentino walked into stage with a surprising instrument:
a square pandeiro made of mucura skin (mucura is a kind of wild rat). At
first, the audience hissed him out, full of mockery and scorn. After a
few moments of frenzy, the audience gave him a break, and Laurentino
started to play "Aquarela do Brasil", playing harmonica and pandeiro at
the same time. "When I stopped, the audience got crazy, clapping their
hands at me", says he.
Mestre Laurentino was one of the most important guests of "Música do
Brasil", a project developed by Abril Music and MTV, which intended to
register, with great authenticity, Brazilian musical genres and
rhythmical diversity, following our tradition of exploratory musical
research as practiced by the writer Mário de Andrade, Marcus Pereira and
FUNARTE. Author of more than 300 songs, he did his first recording
sessions at MTV Brasil, TVE (TVEducativa) and Canal 21 (all of them TV
broadcasting stations). He also owns the copyright related to the song
"Lourinha Americana", recorded and played by Mundo Livre S.A., an
alternative pop band from Recife (Northeast, Brasil).
Rádio Cipó - Comunidade Musical de Produção Independente was formed in
January, 2002, by the producer Carlinhos, who also took part in the
project "Música do Brasil", playing alive with Mangabezzo (a regional
band from Pará - North, Brasil) songs like "Mangabezzo" and "Ilha de
Caras", jamming with folk guitar player Mestre Vieira (who is quoted as
the legendary inventor of several local rhythms) and playing surf music
together with guitarrada (a typical musical genre from Pará). Rádio Cipó
is an evolutive and dynamic musical community, open to any musician
(regardless of tendencies/genres/styles) who is able to adapt his sound
to a "low-tech" way of producing music. Its main target is the
independent production of sonic media, recording local artists and
publishing their works (CDs and MP3).
