Re: microsound Digest 23 Jun 2003 14:11:59 -0000 Issue 942
very disappointing for me.
i've been going to sonar for the past 4 years
my first time there was a totally overwhelming experience.
it's getting worse and more expensive every year.
and this last once was the worst one of all
and i'm certainly not going next year.
what had bjork to do with it anyway?
they sold out the friday evening (because of bjork...) and the 3-day ticket
(because of bjork...) and that spoiled things for many people (including me)
who had travelled to get there, certainly not to see bjork.
it's big business now and they're getting greedy. that's the one and only
explanation.
too many people, queues to drink, pee or see things.
had very little chance to see the side-exhibition or the sonarama (short
films) section which have always been a big part of the festival. very
little chance to see anything properly due to the overcrowded and overheated
situation (this year the weather was exceedingly hot). physically demanding.
it's getting more and more commercial. you can see all the superstar djs if
you want (nothing new though, seen jeffmills at least 6/7 times)
but less and less interesting stuff.
akufen bored after 2 mins. phoenecia was so and so, pole was utterly
disppointing. matthew herbert's opening concert was sold out ages ago, and
anyway it was an out-of-festival ticket.
i can name very few worthwhile sets (for me, that is):
jamie liddel (super), alexei borisov, markus detzmer, schneider tm,
errorsmith + two polish selectors whose names i've forgotten (something like
wojt3k&paul). that's about it.
not enough for a 98euro-3-day-and-night festival.
