RE: [microsound] [ot tek] pc laptop audio interface recommendations...

On the topic, ive got an ongoing noise problem with using my (PC) laptop
in certain performance environments.

It sounds like processor noise (little buzzes and clicks that seem to
correspond to the machine doing various things, as well as periodic low
level bleeps)

My original thought was that the sound card in the laptop was picking up
the noise from the rest of the hardware, so I went out and bought the
Xitel HiFi-Link, a single output USB Audio Device, thinking that by
using an external audio device, I'd get away from the noise.

The first thing I found was how nice it was having two separate sound
outputs on the laptop - one for monitoring and previewing, and the other
as a main out. The sencond thing I found was that the processor noise
was still there! How is this possible? Moving the device as far away
from the laptop as possible doesn't make any difference. The noise
volume is constant.

The other thing ive noticed is that it seems to be dependedent on what
the output is connected to. Some mixing desks seem to pick up the noise
much worse than others. Proximity of the laptop to the mixer seems
again to make no difference.

Id love to be able to sort this problem out - at the moment, it's a bit
of a lottery as to whether a given system that im connecting to will
pick up the noise or not.

Any help much appreciated!
