The recent dry spell aside, I've been doing that for more than 15
years. This work has been entirely within arts and entertainment
technology, and it has ranged from hardware/software testing to
software development to technical support to technical and marketing
writing. The longest stretch was with one digital audio company that
was geographically distributed, with individuals and small groups
working on hardware design, software development, manufacturing,
marketing and sales, financial management, documentation, and product
support. People were working in at least seven different locations
and communicating by e-mail and telephone and sharing data via ftp.
Part of this arrangement was due to "outsourcing" for such things as
documentation and art design, but even the core functions continue to
operate in this fashion.
